Hempies everywhere

This weekend really flew by! Davis was buzzing with people for the Whole Earth festival, which spanned Friday through Sunday. The town seemed to mimic Austin City Limits (or Coachella? or Burning Man?)  for the weekend.

People danced entranced by psychedelic bands.

Hippies swung from trees and their hips with hula hoops about their knees.

They wondered the streets sans shoes, covered in henna tattoos.

No one was in a hurry, the air filled with ganja and curry.

But alas, it is Monday. What better way to start the day than with a smoothie, lovingly named “The Chronic?!”

I’m kidding – this smoothie is a delicious THC-free way to get your hemp on. While I was in Austin, I went to Daily Juice, my old favorite juice place. They have lots of health supplements, herbal shots, cleansing drinks, juices, and smoothies. The best one by far is named The Chronic. However, a size small is about 10 ounces and now a whopping 8 dollar$, so I skipped it and told myself I would make it on my own as soon as I got home. I made it this weekend in the spirit of Whole Earth festival. I can’t really describe the taste, other than stating the obvious. It is just a little sweet from the banana with a tang from the hemp seed and earthy undertones from the hemp protein powder. The hemp milk makes it creamy and delicious. It is quite good and a nice change from your typical fruit smoothie.

‘The Chronic’ Smoothie

Recipe: Serves 1

1 frozen banana

1 scoop hemp protein powder

2 tbsp hemp seeds + garnish

3/4 cup hemp milk

3-4 drops vanilla extract

5 drops stevia (or 2 tsp honey)

handful ice

Directions – Add everything a blender with the hemp milk last and blend until smooth!

Benefits:

Hemp seeds * are a complete protein source, containing all the essential amino and fatty acids. The protein is more easily digested than many plant sources. They are mainly composed of fat, especially omega 3 unsaturated fatty acids, which are beneficial to LDL and HDL  cholesterol levels. Hemp also contains fiber, calcium, iron, antioxidants, and chlorophyll, which is thought to be purifying. Also interesting – there are very few cases of hemp allergy.

I also found a great running route this weekend! It turns out there is a high school that is about a 10-15 minute run from my house, so I concocted this fun and relatively short 40 minute workout. I have been so bored with running that I can’t even remember the last time I ran more than 30 minutes. I’m spoiled by intervals and shorter, more intense workouts now days. But this run flew by!

  1. Is this thick? I have an extremely sensitive digestive system and I need to keep things “simple”, but it looks really good. Maybe when my digestion clears a bit. What kind of hemp protein and is it a 15 g or 30 g scoop? Thanks.

  2. Do you think this would taste good with almond milk or soy milk instead of hemp milk? This smoothie looks really good, but the only time I had hemp milk I was not a fan at all as I thought it tasted like grass. Maybe I had a bad brand… The hemp seeds do sound intriguing though, and now I’ll have to keep an eye out for them.

  3. I love Daily Juice, but agree that it’s CRAZY expensive. We treat ourselves every now and then when we go to Austin, but it’s so smart to make your own at home!

  4. mm yum i love that hempy taste. i dont know if its normal to like that taste, but i do!!!

oh california and its hippy festivals…. i miss it!! im coming home this thursday, so excited!

  5. I would LOVE to be in Davis on earth day…sounds like it would be amusing to watch even though I’m not really a THC kinda gal. Been there, done that…now I’m too old. 😛

This smoothie is the only kind of hemp I need in my life! Delicious.

  6. I am all about making “weird smoothies” (read non yogurt and fruit) so I will definitly add it to the list

  7. Wow, I laughed really hard at the beginning of this post 🙂 I’m sure as a former Santa Barbarian, all the hippies of IV would appreciate such a smoothie haha. But seriously though, I’m curious to try it now!!

  8. And I just realized I commented on the pic and not the post… haha But I will say it again… This was SO tasty! I love hemp anything! 🙂
