The Yes Woman is back!!!

Hello all. No, I didn’t die or come down with the Bubonic plague. I did something far more painful…

I took the MCAT.

I made that sucker my MKitty.               Not. They should call it the MSaberToothTiger or the… FTHAT. The first section, Physical Sciences, is a combo of general chemistry and physics, and it was hard. I pretty much blacked out for the first 6 or 7 minutes and couldn’t even do the most basic calculations. When I finally came-to things went a bit smoother, but that section was more difficult than any of the practice tests I took. The rest of the test seemed fine, so I am just hoping that I got an acceptable score on the physical sciences section and made up for it on the verbal and biological sciences sections. Once I get my score back in 30 days……..  -_-  I will do a post on tips for MCAT success if  I did okay.

After the test, I drove back to Davis and went straight to the 8:30pm CrossFit workout. My nerves from the test were still firing like mad and I kept feeling like I was going to vomit. Luckily, I kept my food down and was able to celebrate afterwords! A couple friends and I threw a party at my house that evening and it was awesome to get to see so many people together at once. I love one-on-one time, but sometimes a good party is just what you need. Afterwords we all went to the bars to keep celebrating and dancing. Huge test + good workout + tons of friends = overstimulation to the max. In the best kind of way.

On Friday, I spontaneously lost my mind and made a few friends go to San Francisco with me. I used to go to the city at least once a month, but since beginning studying for the MCAT 5 months ago, I haven’t let myself go simply because it was too many hours away from studying. We went (unsuccessfully) shopping on the Haight and then to the famous Mitchell’s ice cream parlor. I have been craving Ube ice cream (Japanese sweet potato) ever since I discovered it one day in Austin. I found a weird purple pint of ice cream at Central Market and bought it on a whim; it was so friggin’ delicious that I couldn’t help but demolish it right then and there. Although there were many unique and delicious flavors at Mitchell’s, I got a small cone of Ube and enjoyed every last lactose molecule of it..

I woke up early yesterday morning feeling fully recovered and ready to hit the gym. I decided to finally figure out what my max back squat is. Apparently it is the exact same as my max deadlift? I am stoked that they are both 180 pounds, but I think people usually have a stronger deadlift than back squat. Thoughts? Sable? Gotta work on that!

Afterwords, I was still feeling antsy, so I kept going. I definitely recommend you give this one a try! It is exhausting – in a really sexy way.

Snatch Dat Circuit

4 rounds of:

  • 500 m row
  • 30x wall balls, with a 14 lb medicine ball
  • 8x dumbbell snatch, per arm, 32.5 pounds
  • 400 m run, fast (7 minute mile pace for me)
  • 8x burpee with pushup

After the gym sesh, I made lunch and packed up the car for another spontaneous adventure. My friend and I had been musing about going camping lately, and we finally decided to just do it. We drove about an hour and a half away and found this nifty free camping area. However, we didn’t want to just camp on the grounds, so we hiked into the woody hills for a few hours.

essentially what it looks like, from the camping website

As the sun began to fall, we made our camping site and went to sleep with the sunset. Going to sleep with the Earth just feels right. And despite the lumpy ground and thin sleeping bag, I slept hard. I swear it felt like every single feeling of exhaustion I have had and then ignored in the last 5 months came flooding back to me last night. Ordinarily, I sleep about 7 hours and am very sensitive to any light or noise. Last night, I think I slept from around 10pm to 10am. Unheard of. At one point, I woke up and looked up at the sky to find thousands of beautiful stars. There were 5 exceedingly bright ones that made a constellation of a star. A star of stars. 🙂

Today, we hiked and swam a bit, and returned to Davis. I went to CrossFit (it was awesome) and made this bomb dinner afterwords. It’s a snap to make!

Easy Chicken Paprika

Recipe: Serves 1

Inspired by eat live run

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup sweet onion, diced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 chicken breast
  • ~1/3 of a sweet potato, grated
  • 1-2 tbsp smoked paprika (smoked is so much betterrrr!)
  • salt, to taste
  • pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup veggie broth
  • 1/4 cup organic sour cream, regular or light

Directions – Place a large pan on the stove on medium heat. Add the olive oil and onion. Let them soften for a few minutes while you slice the chicken breast and grate the potato. Add the chicken, sweet potato, and veggie broth to the pan. Top with smoked paprika, salt, and cayenne pepper. Flip and stir until the potato has softened and the chicken is cooked through. Reduce the heat. When the pan has cooled a bit, add the sour cream. Stir everything with the spatula. Once everything is covered in a creamy, red paprika sauce, spoon everything into a bowl and enjoy.

Chicken * a lean source of protein and B vitamins!

Paprika * contains the antioxidants flavonoids, carotenoids, and capsicum, which aid in circulatory system health (thus preventing heart disease). Capsicum also raises the metabolism temporarily. Also used as a digestive aid.

Cayenne pepper * high in antioxidants and temporarily raises the metabolism!

Onion * Contains quercitin, an antioxidant that halts the growth of tumors. Also, studies have linked regular onion consumption with lower cholesterol and reduced risk of colon cancer. A prime source of chromium.

I hope you all had a lovely Memorial Day weekend!
